General Description:
SMIC Academy is a church school which started in 1997 to help Alabama homeschooling families satisfy our state laws on compulsory attendance (ยง16-28). Our full name is Shades Mountain Independent Church Academy. In addition to providing oversight and accountability, our priorities for this ministry are Discipleship, Scholarship, and Fellowship. Each of these are important in the upbuilding of our families, and each facet can serve to grow our families in the other two facets.
Mission statement:
Based on the exhortation of Deuteronomy 6:6-9, SMIC Academy is a church-based, family-centered, discipleship ministry that assists homeschool parents in fulfilling their calling to home educate their children according to the Christ-centered, Biblical worldview.
Requirements:
- three faculty meetings each year, with special topics
- curriculum form and attendance form due yearly
- two or four progress reports per year
- standardized achievement testing every other year
- Premiers membership for 2 years for young families
- High School orientation for 7th grade and up
Services:

- communication on your behalf with other institutions
- educating parents with workshops and orientations
- testing opportunities (Iowa, DukeTIP, PSAT, etc.)
- customized academic advising at all levels
- graduation ceremonies (K5 and 12th; affordable)

- ACEA Competitions in Speech, Fine Arts, Music, Academic, Spelling, Bible, Track

- spelling and geography bee
- ice skating, bowling, and field days
- age appropriate field trips
Fees:
- tuition per family of $200 for 1st-7th or $300 for 8th-12th
- dues to Alabama Christian Education Association
- small fees for new family, new student, and graduation
- Statement of Faith: REQUIRED.
- HSLDA: NOT required.
